Sweet (And Savory) Homemade Tomato Jam (So many uses!)

Who else out there is absolutely obsessed with tomato jam? I got into it when I started growing my own tomatoes in my garden. If you’re in a similar situation or just love tomatoes in general, you need to try this recipe! Tomato jam goes well with everything and has so many uses.

How to Make Homemade Tomato Jam

  • Prepare the ingredients. I have all of these in my garden except for the jalapeno, so I make sure to pick the ripe ones. Core and chop the ripe tomatoes, grate the fresh ginger and squeeze out the lemon juice. Mince the jalapeno as well if you want a bit of heat.
  • Prepare the pot (or saucepan). Add the tomatoes, honey, lemon juice, ginger, cumin, cinnamon, cloves, jalapeno, and salt to a large saucepan and bring to a boil.
  • Simmer. Lower the heat and leave the jam to simmer for one hour and 15 minutes, giving the mixture an occasional stir. Taste it every so often and adjust the seasoning as required.
  • Bottle it. Transfer the jam to a jar and allow it to cool completely. Keep it stored in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve it.

Best Way to Store Tomato Jam

You’re going to want to keep your tomato jam sealed up in an airtight container like a mason jar and keep it in the refrigerator.

It’s also possible to freeze this jam if you want to save it for longer than two weeks. Just keep in mind that the jam will expand when you freeze it, so a plastic container would be better than a mason jar for freezing.

How Long Does Tomato Jam Keep For?

This homemade tomato jam will last in the refrigerator for about two weeks. Around the 14 day mark is when I usually begin to notice that it’s starting to go bad and show a little bit of discoloration.

If you opt to freeze the jam instead, it should stay good for up to six months. When you’re ready to thaw it out, you can simply add it into a large pot and warm it up over medium heat.

3 Great Health Benefits Provided by Tomato Jam

One of the main reasons that I love making tomato jam so much (besides the fact that it goes with so many different things) is because it’s actually really good for you. Here are three solid health benefits you’ll get from making this jam.

  • Good for eye health. Tomatoes contain both vitamin C and beta carotene (an antioxidant that is converted by your body into vitamin A), two micronutrients that help to keep your eyes healthy. (1)
  • Protects against some types of cancer. Tomatoes also contain another type of antioxidant known as lycopene. Studies have found that lycopene contains potent anti-cancer properties. (2)
  • Protects against cardiovascular disease. Tomatoes contain vitamins and minerals with proven benefits for your heart health.

Do I Really Need to Core the Tomatoes?

I always core my tomatoes whenever I make homemade tomato jam. I like the consistency a lot better and find that the jam ends up tasting just that little bit sweeter.

However, some people actually do prefer to leave the seeds in when they make their own tomato jam because they find that it gives the mixture a consistency that’s more similar to more traditional types of jam.
