Pin ItIt’s never been easier to make your own sour grapes at home. And they’re about 5x cheaper than the ones you can buy in your grocery store freezer aisle (and so much better imo).
Here’s what you’ll need and how to make them with just 4 ingredients!
Candy Coated Sour Frozen Grapes Ingredients
- Grapes: You can use any grapes for these, but my favorite is big green grapes! They have the best texture + tartness. I have also tried them with cotton candy grapes as well, and those we’re incredible.
- Lemon Juice: Only use freshly squeezed lemon juice! Bottled lemon juice just won’t be the same.
- White Sugar: To give you that perfect sour candy coating and candy crunch.
- Citric acid (optional): This is not 100% necessary, but does give you the closest taste to the frozen sour grapes you would find in your freezer aisle, and that extra sourness you probably want. Most grocery stores carry citric acid in the baking aisle.

How to Make Frozen Sour Grapes
- Prep the Grapes. Rinse your grapes, remove stems, and place them in a bowl. Add lemon juice and a sprinkle of citric acid, then toss to coat.

- Coat with Sugar. Roll the grapes in sugar until fully covered.

- Freeze and Store. Spread the candy coated grapes on a parchment-lined tray, freeze for 2–3 hours, then transfer to a freezer-safe container. Enjoy frozen!

Storage and Freezing Instructions
To Store: Once frozen, transfer grapes to a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag. Keep in the freezer for up to 1 month for best flavor and texture.
To Freeze: Freeze grapes on a parchment-lined tray first to prevent sticking. After 2–3 hours, move them to a sealed container or bag and store in the freezer until ready to eat.

Grapes are one of my all-time favorite fruits (and I just love making fun desserts with them). If you haven’t tried these yet, you also need to make these galaxy candy grapes (perfect for a birthday party or fun treat) and this grape tanghulu (a crunchy grape street snack).
