How to Make Puff Pastry Donuts

  1. Prep Apples & Pastry. Mix cinnamon and sugar. Slice apples into rounds and core the centers. Cut puff pastry into 1-inch strips.

  2. Wrap the Donuts. Roll each apple slice inside a puff pastry strip to form a spiral donut. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar.
  3. Bake & Serve. Bake on a parchment-lined sheet at 400°F for 18–20 minutes until golden and puffed. Serve warm.

Make-Ahead and Freezing Instructions

To Make-Ahead: Assemble the puff pastry–wrapped apple donuts, place them on a baking sheet, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Bake when ready.

To Store: Keep baked donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 day or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer to crisp them back up.

To Freeze: Freeze unbaked donuts on a sheet pan until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes as needed.

Ingredients 

  • 2 sheets of puff pastry
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 large apples
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • In a small bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
  • Slice the apples crosswise into rounds about ¾ inch thick.
  • Use a small round cutter or corer to remove the seeds from each apple slice.
  • Roll out each puff pastry sheet and cut into strips about 1 inch wide.
  • Place one apple slice at the end of a pastry strip and roll the strip around the apple slice to form a spiral “donut.”
  • Repeat with all apple slices.
  • Brush the tops with lightly beaten egg and sprinkle evenly with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  • Place the donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Bake for 18–20 minutes, until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  • Serve warm.
