What Types of Mushrooms Should I Use?

It’s up to you to decide what types of mushrooms you would like to use when making this garlic butter mushroom recipe. With that being said, if you aren’t sure what to use, here are a few suggestions:

  • Button mushrooms. Button mushrooms, also known as white mushrooms, are probably the most common type of mushroom that you’ll find on grocery store shelves. Their flavor isn’t too intense, which makes them perfect as a general ‘go to’ mushroom option.
  • Portobello mushrooms. This type of mushroom is incredibly popular in Italy as it’s rich flavor is commonly used to improve pastas and creamy sauces. Since these mushrooms are especially meaty, they’re a perfect choice for making stuffed mushrooms or grilled mushroom recipes.
  • Shiitake mushrooms. Also known as lentinula edodes, shiitake mushrooms are most typically used in making Asian cuisine inspired dishes. Like portobello mushrooms, these mushrooms are rather meaty and they add a rather distinctive umami to dishes once they’re cooked.

How to Store Garlic Butter Mushrooms for Later

If you end up with leftover garlic butter mushrooms, the first thing that you’ll need to do is allow them to cool off completely before transferring them into an airtight container. Seal the container up tightly and you can store the mushrooms in the fridge for up to 3 to 5 days.

You can even store the mushrooms like this ahead of time if you would like to prep this meal ahead of time. Just keep in mind that it’s not recommended to cut the mushrooms and store in the fridge before you cook them; they can end up turning brown and drying out.
