How to Make Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments

  1. Prepare the base: Add the ground cinnamon, applesauce, and white glue together and knead to combine. Lightly sprinkle a cutting board or silicon mat with cinnamon. Roll out the dough until it is a quarter inch thick. Cut out the ornaments using cookie cutters.

  2. Bake: Place the ornament bases on the prepared baking sheet. Using a small straw, make a hole in the top of each ornament. Bake for two and a half hours. Remove the baked ornaments from the oven and allow them to cool completely.

  3. Make the decorations: Mix the powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water together with a spoon. Keep adding one teaspoon of water at a time until you get a thick glaze consistency.
  4. Decorate: Scoop the icing into a piping bag with a small round piping tip. Decorate the ornaments with the royal icing and sprinkles. Let the icing set completely, then string the ornaments up with a piece of twine or ribbon to hang.

Make Ahead and Storing Instructions

To Make Ahead: If you don’t want to bake the ornaments, make them three to four days in advance and let them dry in the sun. Once they are completely dry, decorate and string them up.

To Store: Do not use icing to decorate your ornaments. Instead, mix powdered sugar with white glue. Ornaments without royal icing can be wrapped in tissue paper and stored indefinitely. If you notice any cracks or if they start looking ragged, throw them away.
