Storing and Freezing Instructions

To Store: Blueberry applesauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Make sure the jar or container seals properly to keep the sauce fresh for as long as possible.

To Freeze: Allow the applesauce to cool completely. Spoon the cooled mixture into ice cube trays and freeze until solid. Pop the cubes out of the trays and dump them into freezer bags labeled with the date and the type of applesauce. Keep frozen for up to three months.

Recipe Variations

Strawberry blueberry applesauce: To create a mixed-berry applesauce, replace half the blueberries with fresh strawberries. Use about half a cup of blueberries and add half a cup of strawberries.

Cranberry applesauce: Mix half a cup of fresh cranberries along with the blueberries for a tangy flavor, and add two tablespoons of sugar along with the honey to accommodate the extra tartness.

Peachy blueberry applesauce: Add half a cup of diced fresh peaches to the mix for a peach-infused version, giving a soft, sweet taste to the applesauce.

Notes

  • Fruit preparation: Always start by thoroughly washing your blueberries and apples to remove any residue or dirt. If using fresh-picked apples, this step is especially important to make sure you don’t end up with crunchy dirt in your sauce.
  • Cooking tip: Quickly bring the fruit and water to a boil before reducing it to a simmer. This helps to soften the fruits faster and integrate their flavors effectively. Cooking time can vary based on the fruit’s firmness, but typically, you can expect around 20 to 30 minutes max.
  • Texture preferences: You can decide to leave the skins of the fruits on for a coarse texture or peel them for a smooth texture. Once the fruits are cooked you can also choose between blending and mashing to get a smooth or slightly chunky sauce.
  • Storing tip: After cooking, the applesauce can be stored in the refrigerator for about a week. For longer storage, it can be frozen or canned. Freezing is straightforward — simply scoop the applesauce into ice trays and freeze. If canning, make sure you follow proper canning guidelines to preserve the applesauce safely.
