3 Tips for Cooking Flank Steak

Since flank steak can admittedly be a rather tough cut of meat, here are 3 helpful tips to keep in mind when cooking with flank steak:

  • Use cooking oil. Using olive oil (or a similar type of cooking oil spray) helps to lock in moisture and flavor when cooking steak, both of which are essential when using flank cuts.
  • Cook over high heat. Use anything from a medium high to high heat when cooking flank steak. Typically, flank steak requires about 4 minutes of cooking time per side at a high heat; for stir-fry recipes like this one, just keep a close eye on them as you cook.
  • Marinade or braise. A great way to make flank steak more tender is to use either a marinade sauce or braise. This can help to break down the extra-tough muscle fibers found in flank cuts, resulting in a far more tender steak than you would have otherwise.

  • Other cuts of beef (T-bone, ribeye, porterhouse, etc.)
  • Chicken (breasts, thighs, drumsticks)
  • Pork (pork chops, tenderloins, shoulder, etc.)
