How to Make Applesauce Pie

  1. Mix the crust dough: Add the flour, sugar, and salt together and pulse a few times. Add the butter and pulse a few more times until the butter is the size of peas. With the motor running, pour in the iced water and process until the dough starts to come together.

  2. Refrigerate the dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and shape it into a disc. Cover the crust dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for one hour.

  3. Prepare the filling: Mix the eggs and sugar together using a handheld or electric mixer until pale. Add the melted butter, applesauce, vanilla, lemon juice, and milk and beat well. Add the cinnamon flour mixture and beat to combine. Set aside.

  4. Prepare the pie: Sprinkle some flour on a hard surface and roll out the dough until it’s a quarter of an inch thick. Gently wrap the crust dough around a floured rolling pin and put it into the prepared pie dish. Pour in the apple pie filling.

  5. Bake: Bake the prepared applesauce pie in the oven for 45 to 50 minutes. Let it set for a few minutes after baking before cutting and serving with your favorite garnish. 

Make Ahead and Freezing Instructions

To Make Ahead: Applesauce pie can be made a day in advance. Just let it cool completely after baking, wrap it tightly, or put the sliced pie pieces in an airtight container and refrigerate. Leftover applesauce pie can be stored in the refrigerator for another two days. 

To Freeze: For longer storage, wrap your pi tightly and freeze it for up to three months. For easier serving, cut the pie into portions and warp each portion individually before freezing. To Thaw, leave the chosen portion in the refrigerator overnight or put it on the counter for an hour or two. Once thawed, unwrap and enjoy.

Ingredients 

For the pie crust:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour plus more to dust
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 7 oz cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 4 tbsp ice cold water

For the pie filling:

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • 2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 5 tbsp flour
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

Instructions 

  • To make the crust, add the flour, sugar and salt and pulse a few times.
  • Add the butter and pulse a few times, until the butter is the size of peas.
  • With the motor running, pour iced water and process until the dough starts to come together.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and shape into a disc.
  • Cover with cling wrap and refrigerate for one hour.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish.
  • Using an electric mixer, beat the eggs and sugar.
  • Add the melted butter, applesauce, vanilla, lemon juice and milk and beat well.
  • Add the flour and cinnamon and beat to combine. Set aside.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough until ¼ inch thick.
  • Gently wrap the dough around a floured rolling pin and unroll onto the prepared pie dish.
  • Pour in apple pie filling.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 45-50 minutes.
