How to Make Applesauce Bread

  1. Mix the batter. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. In another bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until smooth. Add applesauce and melted butter, then mix well. Add the dry ingredients and stir until smooth. Fold in chopped walnuts and divide the batter between greased loaf pans.

  2. Add crumble and bake. For the crumble, mix flour, oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Add butter and stir until crumbly. Sprinkle over the batter. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the bread cool completely.

  3. Glaze and serve. Stir together powdered sugar and milk to make the glaze. Drizzle over the cooled bread before serving.

Thawing and Freezing Instructions

To freeze: To store the bread for up to three months, wrap it in plastic wrap without the glaze and freeze until firm.

To thaw: Leave the applesauce loaf wrapped and let it sit out on the counter for two to three hours to fully thaw. Alternatively, put the frozen loaf in the refrigerator overnight. Once defrosted, add the glaze and serve.

Recipe Variations

Apple cranberry twist: Fold one cup of fresh cranberries into the batter for a tangy burst of flavor and vibrant color.

Maple pecan applesauce bread: Replace the walnuts with chopped pecans and substitute one cup of granulated sugar with one cup of maple syrup for a rich, nutty sweetness.

Cinnamon swirl applesauce bread: Mix a quarter cup of brown sugar and one tablespoon of ground cinnamon. After pouring the batter into pans, sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture on top and swirl with a knife.

Ingredients 

For the applesauce bread:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 cups applesauce, at room temperature
  • 1 cup butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 2 cups walnuts, chopped

For the crumble topping:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup rolled oats
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted

For the glaze:

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp milk

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF.
  • Line two 9×5 inch loaf pans with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • In a bowl combine the flour, baking soda, ground cinnamon and salt. Set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment beat the eggs and sugar.
  • Add the applesauce and butter and beat to combine.
  • Add in the flour mixture and beat until smooth.
  • Fold in the chopped walnuts.
  • Divide the batter between prepared pans.
  • To make the crumble, in a bowl add the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar and cinnamon and stir to combine.
  • Add the butter and stir until just combined.
  • Top the breads with crumble.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.
  • To make the glaze in a small bowl combine the powder sugar and milk.
  • Drizzle the glaze over the bread.
  • To freeze, wrap the bread without glaze in plastic wrap and freeze until firm.
  • To thaw, leave the loaf wrapped and let it sit out on the counter for two to three hours to fully thaw.
