Make Ahead and Freezing Instructions

To Make Ahead: Apple fritters are best enjoyed fresh. If you do have leftovers or need to store them, you can leave them at room temperature for two days or in the refrigerator for up to a week as long as they are in a sealed container.

To Freeze: Apple fritters can also be frozen for up to three months. Just don’t glaze them beforehand and put them in a freezer bag. To defrost the fritters, leave them at room temperature or reheat in the oven. Once fully thawed, glaze them and serve.

Recipe Variations

Apple pie filling fritters: Use canned apple pie filling instead of fresh apples for a richer taste and smoother texture, chopping up the pie filling to ensure even distribution in the batter.

Honey glazed fritters: Replace the sugar in the batter and glaze with honey to create a healthier alternative with a naturally sweet flavor.

Cranberry apple fritters: Mix in half a cup of dried cranberries with the apples to add a tart contrast to the sweet batter.

Pumpkin apple fritters: Blend a quarter cup of pumpkin puree with the applesauce for a seasonal flavor that pairs wonderfully with the included spices.

Baked apple fritters: For a healthier version, bake the fritters instead of frying. Scoop the fritter batter onto a baking sheet (lined and greased) and bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit until they are golden brown. Flip them halfway through.

Maple-glazed fritters: Use pure maple syrup instead of milk or water in the glaze for a distinctively rich, autumnal sweetness.

Apple Fritters

There apple fritters (made with applesauce) are perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside, and covered in the most addictive glaze.
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Servings: 12

Ingredients

For the apple fritters:

  • 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 large apples, diced
  • vegetable oil for frying

For the glaze:

  • 3 cup powdered sugar
  • cup milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Add the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and sugar to a bowl and stir to combine.
  • Add the milk and applesauce and stir well.
  • Fold in diced apples.
  • Pour the frying oil to depth of 2 inches in a large skillet and heat it over medium-high heat.
  • Scoop ¼ cup of the apple fritter batter and place in the hot oil, spreading it down to flatten.
  • Fry for a few minutes or until deeply golden.
  • Transfer the fritters to a paper towel-lined plate.
  • In a bowl combine the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract.
  • Toss each fritter in the glaze.
  • Place the fritters on rack to harden and drip.

Notes

  • Proper oil temperature: Maintaining the correct oil temperature (around 375 degrees Fahrenheit) is non-negotiable for perfectly golden, crispy fritters without allowing them to absorb too much oil. Use a candy or deep-fry thermometer to help monitor this.
  • Frying technique: Fry the batter in small batches to prevent overcrowding and ensure even cooking. Each batch should be fried until golden brown. Adjust the heat as needed to maintain the oil temperature.
  • Draining tip: After frying, drain away excess oil with a paper towel, then move the fritters to a cooling rack. This step helps keep them crispy.
  • Glaze consistency: The glaze for applesauce fritters needs to be thick but pourable. If it’s too runny, it won’t coat the fritters properly, so add more powdered sugar to thicken it up. If it’s too thick, add more milk and mix until you get the consistency you want.
